Peeing Like a Man

Note: This post is a continuation of a discussion between someone I can’t quite remember and myself, started by a post that person (she) wrote on the same topic, inspired by personal experience. If it was you, please speak up.

This week I’m back in San Francisco on travel for work. I’m using my free time to wander the city and explore stuff. Today I walked from Pier 39 to the hotel via Chinatown and a few historical sites. On that trip I encountered some of the most foul places of “rest” I have ever seen. Ok that’s a lie, but they did rank up there with my worst encounters, one of which involved banana spiders.

As I passed though these establishments, I couldn’t help but think… “Man, I wish I could pee like a man. My thighs would be so much less sore and I wouldn’t have the urge to take a culture of everything I brought into the bathroom with me.” Then I remembered: There is help!
A week or so ago Chicks Climbing posted a link to “Go Girl,” FUD’s. Their slogan is “Because life’s greatest adventures shouldn’t be finding a bathroom.” Seeing this link brought a flashback to an earlier conversation I had about these devices and how awkward they are, how to practice using them, and if anyone had found a good one.

The consensus was “I’d rather dehydrate than pull my pants down in the snow, but I’d also rather dehydrate than try to use one of those things.” While I’ve done (shamefully) the first one, I have never tried a FUD myself so I can’t really comment. Seeing Go Girl had a sale, and knowing that ice climbing and other adventures are coming up, I decided I should give it a try.

Go Girl is a reusable/disposable plastic funnel shaped device that comes with a biodegradable plastic disposal bag and toilet paper. You can either wash it, or toss it. I’d go with the wash option cause the plastic is pretty sturdy. My biggest concern with one of these devices is the (how can one describe this without being too vivid?) splash that happens when in an unnatural position. (You ladies should know what I’m talking about.) Squatting is almost as dangerous as any device could be due to this fact. The Go Girl has a handy inner rim that takes care of that issue and forms a nice seal, along with a shape that makes it easy to aim. Although the instructions had some suggestions for how to practice using it, I dove in and came out the other side fine and dandy, and fresh as a daisy. Maybe this is because I am a quick learner, I dunno.

Being that this is the only brand I’ve tried, I can’t really say that the Go Girl is the ultimately in manly-peeing hardware, but from what I’ve heard it could be one of the best. I’d say give it a try at least. My future in adventuring looks bright and hydrated. Thanks Go Girl :-D
